Oxeye Sunflower This tree is ‘Mountain Grown’ at Alpha Nursery and is an ‘Idaho Preferred’ Plant
Oxeye Sunflower are known as False Sunflowers as they look like a sunflower but are not the seed-bearing variety. These flowers are a long-standing favorite of many of the early settlers. This strain was originally brought to the Cascade area by the early pioneers and is propagated by Alpha Nursery. They are care-free and produce blooms from late spring to late summer.
They will grow from 3' to 6' tall and from 2' to 4' wide forming a bushy clump. They have light green leaves. It will die back in the winter. The flowers are a golden-yellow with a darker center. They make a great cut flower and will attract butterflies. It is also deer resistant. Deadheading the spent flowers will extend the blooming season.
Oxeye Sunflower likes to be planted in full sun. You can divide this perennial in early spring. Oxeye Sunflower likes regular watering so don't allow to dry out. Plant Oxeye Sunflower as a specimen, or as a taller flower in a perennial border, Cottage Garden or in a Moon Garden.
