Massachusetts Bearberry
Massachusetts Bearberry, also known as Kinnikinnick is an evergreen, vigorous groundcover that uniformly spreads quickly. It produces white and pink flowers on its branches in spring to early summer. Red berries are produced that last into the winter. It will grow from 6 to 12" tall and 3 to 6' wide.
It prefers well drained, sandy soil with an acidic PH and a sunny location but will take light shade. Bearberry makes an excellent ground cover and erosion control for banks, berms and where quick, low groundcover is needed. It can also be used in containers, rock gardens, and alpine gardens, and woodland gardens.
Massachusetts Bearberry attracts birds, is deer resistant, drought tolerant, is a native plant in our area, and is a Firewise plant.
