Butterfly Milkweed
Butterfly Milkweed is a native plant to meadows and pastures. It is a medium grower with deep green leaves. In midsummer the stems will be topped with scarlet orange to red flowers which will attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees. It will make a great cut flower for that tabletop vase. It will grow from 1' to 3' tall and just as wide.
Certain types of butterflies also lay their eggs specifically on this plant, which the larvae use for food. We have observed Monarch Butterfly larvae on these plants at the nursery.
Plant Butterfly Milkweed in full sun and well-drained soil. Use this plant to the rear of a perennial border, massed in a perennial bed, or a Cottage Garden. Butterfly Milkweed is not invasive like its eastern cousin. Add this plant to your garden for a bright splash of orange red during the summer and early fall. Butterfly Milkweed is a great attractor of butterflies where it gets its name.
