Red Elderberry This shrub is ‘Mountain Grown’ at Alpha Nursery and is an ‘Idaho Preferred’ Plant

Red Elderberry is a deciduous shrub that will produce edible berries. Be sure to cook them first though as they are not palatable when raw and poisonous to people. The leaves, stems, and flowers are also toxic when ingested. Don't plant this plant where small children can get access to them. When cooked though, they make great jam and wine. It will grow to a height of 10 ' 18' tall and just as wide. The leaves are green and the shrub produces white flowers in late spring to early summer.
Birds and wildlife are attracted to the berries. Bees are attracted the flowers. Red Elderberry likes to be planted in full sun to part shade. It also likes moist, well drained soil. This shrub is a great choice for a Woodland Garden or Wildlife Habitat. Even though it likes moist, well drained soil, it is also drought tolerant once established. Red Elderberry is also a Firewise plant.
